Since I aim to showcase real recipes that yield real food that real people eat and enjoy, I don’t doctor up my food to make it more photogenic. I also try not to keep my family waiting too terribly long for their meal while I photograph it! If that means that sometimes the food I’ve made needs to be eaten before I am able to get the perfect shot then so be it. I’ll catch it next time.

As for styling, my approach is that less is more. This is partly because I have an almost embarrassingly minute collection of props, but also because fussy styling just isn’t me. The result has been that I’ve developed my own style that celebrates simplicity. I like it – it works for me and it lets the food be the star of the show – so I’m going with it.

By the way, whenever I need a bit of help with my food styling and/or photography, I head over to G and Neel’s fantastic blog dedicated entirely to the subject: Learn Food Photography – they even have a free ebook to download! Also check out Taylor Mathis’s Tips, Tricks and Tutorials. His photography is gorgeous, and it’s great that he takes the time to share his insights.
